Why did Zynga’s stock drop when Facebook went public?
Zynga went through its own private flash crash. The straight drop and rise and drop in its stock after Facebook’s IPO is the classic signature of program trading. Whatever algorithms traders were using agreed that the stock was hugely overvalued, then undervalued, then overvalued again. So they all screamed “SELL” or “BUY” at the same time. Then they stopped. Trading resumed at a more human pace. Why the change? One plausible explanation is that traders unloaded Zynga stock because now they could buy Facebook stock. They did so en masse — until Zynga stock fell so far that it became too cheap to resist. Then they bought it en masse — until Zynga stock rose so far that it became too expensive to resist dumping.

Design studio To-Genkyo proposes a new method of tracking a foods expiration date by using a universally recognizable visual. The new design keeps people honest by changing colors based on the level of ammonia the food emits as it ages. After it has passed its expiration date the barcode is no longer readable, making it impossible to sell.

They say that people in Hollywood are always nice to everyone [..]because they’re never certain whom they might be dealing with[..].
Well, we’re all in showbiz now [..] we’re always selling ourselves. We use social media to create a product — to create a brand — and the product is us. We treat ourselves like little businesses, something to be managed and promoted.
The self today is an entrepreneurial self, a self that’s packaged to be sold.

RIM had a complete internal panic when Apple unveiled the iPhone in 2007, a former employee revealed this weekend. The BlackBerry maker is now known to have held multiple all-hands meetings on January 10 that year, a day after the iPhone was on stage, and to have made outlandish claims about its features. Apple was effectively accused of lying as it was supposedly impossible that a device could have such a large touchscreen but still get a usable lifespan away from a power outlet.
Marketing myopia at its best.

Dictaphone Parcel by Lauri Warsta
Animated short film, Royal College of Art, London, 2009Those crazy art students… Dictaphone Parcel is an animation based on a sound recorded with a dictaphone travelling secretly inside a parcel. As the hidden recorder travels through the global mail system, from London to Helsinki, it captures the unexpected. We hear a mixture of abstract sounds, various types of transport and even discussions between the mail workers. The animation visualizes this journey by creating an imaginary documentary.

Physical sales in a digital era
For decades, the music industry has been looking to the album charts to establish what made a hit. In the past 10 years, though, album sales have plummeted, sales of singles have surged and new sources of revenue have emerged — like fees for music streamed online and ringtone purchases — that are changing the definition of a hot artist.
Just wanna add that in the 90s the big labels stopped releasing singles afraid of the cannibalization of album sales.
